Your Weekly Word # 2 (with VIDEO)

This week your word  is GRIPE.

  • GRIPE = A COLD

Gripe is a feminine noun: a gripe

In Portuguese we have another word for a light cold, so some books translate gripe as a bad cold.

There are two ways for you to say that you have a cold.
  • Estou com gripe. (I am with a cold)
  • Tenho gripe. (I have a cold)
We also have the word GRIPADO/GRIPADA. It describes someone who has a cold. For example:
  • Eduardo está gripado. (Eduardo has a cold)
  • Marta está gripada. (Marta has a cold)
The English language does not have the word gripado/gripada. Note that the translation above is not literal. The literal translation would be something like "Eduardo is 'coldy'", just like you say hungry or sleepy.
